| ZAPATERO BELIEVES DESALINATION PLANT ARE THE ANSWER: |
March 20th, 2007 |
Spain’s Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, visited the San
Pedro del Pinatar desalination plant, where he said he firmly believes
in desalination of seawater as the solution to the water supply
problems affecting the regions of Murcia, Valencia and Almeria. He
described desalination as a guaranteed and independent source of water
for the regions, and something, which is neither affected by drought
nor dependent on available water resources in other Spanish regions.
The Prime Minister added that work would continue to reduce further the
costs of production. The desalination plant in San Pedro del Pinatar
will be supplying a further 48 cubic hectometres of water per year once
construction of phase 11 is complete. This water will be used to supply
towns in both Murcia and Alicante provinces with drinking water.
Cristina Narbona, the National Minister of the Environment, accompanied
the Prime Minister on the trip, where they both sampled a glass of the
desalinised water produced at the plant. The Murcian Minister of
Agriculture, Don Antonio Cerda, stated that in order for desalinised
water to be used widely it must be sold at the same price as other
water supplies.
