NEW LEGISLATION DOES AWAY WITH REQUIREMENT OF RESIDENCY CARDS FOR EU RESIDENTS IN SPAIN.
Royal Decree 240/2007, which was approved on 16th February 2007 by the
Spanish Council of Ministers, establishes that as from 28th March 2007
European Union citizens will no longer be issued with residency cards.
However, the new decree requires all EU citizens planning to reside in
Spain for more than 3 months to register in person at the Foreigners'
Office (Oficina de Extranjeros) in the region where they are residing
or at designated police stations. Instead of the laminated ID cards a
certificate will be issued to citizens stating their name, address,
nationality, identity number and date of registration.
Those EU citizens in Spain who already have residency cards will not
need to re-register until their residency card expires, at which time
they will be issued with a certificate.
The British Embassy recommends that British citizens in Spain should always carry some proof of identity.
We contacted the Foreigners Office in Cartagena and despite the date
for implementation of the decree being given as March 28th, the
government officials there had not been officially informed of the new
law nor had they received any instructions regarding the introduction
of this new certificate.
