British buyers make up a quarter of all foreign property purchases in Spain according to figures from the College of Registrars.

The research shows that UK investors bought one in 4 properties sold to overseas buyers last year, purchasing 4,350 houses overall.

French buyers were the second biggest market, buying 1,627 homes.

There was a noticeable increase in interest from Scandanavia, with 102% increase in Swedish demand and 58% in Norwegian demand.

Overall sales to international buyers rose 4.4% last year.

Mark Stucklin, managing director of Spanish property information website Spanish Property insight, stated that the diversification of the Spanish property market is a good thing.

"It is undoubtedly good news that international demand for homes in Spain is getting more deversified," he said. "The holiday-home market used to be far too dependent upon British buyers, which was a risk that many promotors and the banks' lending to them failed to understand".

"With the process of international diversification sales should slowly start to increase."

Ognacio Osle, sales and marketing director of house builder Taylor Wimpey de España, added: "We are proud to have a variety of customers from all over the world but plenty are from the UK. Brits are and have always been Spain's biggest fans attracted to the easy reach location, sunny skies and laid back lifestyle."
